Player Profile: Jonathan Drouin

Jonathan Drouin

Jonathan Drouin has had his fair share of ups and downs. Last season was filled with plenty. After requesting a trade he failed to report to Syracuse, leading to a fine from the Lightning. His trade value seemed to be dimishing with doubts about his character. Instead of making a rash decision Steve Yzerman played his cards right and waited on Drouin. Yzermans patience paid off in the end. Steven Stamkos was diagnosed with blood clots leading to the call up of Drouin. He made the most of it showing flashes of his skill. He had 14 points in 17 playoff games and was an integral part of the Lightning run to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Coming into the 2016-2017 season Drouin was faced with high expectations. He was now expected to be a major driving force behind the Lightning offense. Then once again Steven Stamkos was faced with a freak injury putting more pressure on Drouin among others to carry the load. Drouin has done a sufficient job with 40 points in 56 games. Known more for his playmaking ability, he is currently closing in on his first 20 goal season in the NHL with 17 goals currently. Drouin is loaded with potential and at times this season he has shown flat out dominance. For example this shift in OT against the Avalanche:

Drouin displayed patience and his strong puck possession skills. He has the ability to seemingly make something out of nothing and of course his ability to stick handle in tight spaces as displayed in the goal.

Verdict

At 21 years old Jonathan Drouin will only get better. His has unbelievable talent that matches up with any player in the league. As he continues to build confidence I believe Drouin can become among the NHL’s top wingers. With a healthy Steven Stamkos in the lineup the Lightning will be a deadly team. In the years to come Drouin will be expected to put up 70+ points per year. Fantasy owners should be looking to buy Drouin before he fully breaks out. Although he isn’t really a sleeper, he may be a bit undervalued compared to the top fantasy players. Drouin could potentially be a top 5 dynasty winger in the next few years.

Verdict: BUY
